Injury Treatment For Minor Injuries

Injury Treatment For Minor Injuries

So, you or a loved one have a minor injury, and you’re not sure whether you should go to the ER, see a physician, or try to treat it on your own. Each option has benefits and drawbacks, so when considering injury treatment for minor injuries, you need to carefully weigh which choice is best.

Going to the emergency room is an option that is usually best reserved for moderate or severe injuries. When the ER is over-used for minor injuries, it clogs up the system and creates long wait times that prevent people with serious injuries from being seen quickly. However, people with a minor injury may often become stressed and want to see a doctor immediately, and they know that if they go to the ER they will be seen that day.

On the other extreme, making an appointment with your general physician that is days away may be too long to keep dealing with the injury. In this case, waiting is not really a great option either. So, if you have a small injury, what is the best course of action?

Urgent 9 – Clinic

In recent years, the rise of the urgent care center has emerged to meet the needs of people with minor injuries who need to be seen quickly but do not have the injury severity appropriate for an emergency room visit. The clinic wait times are generally very reasonable, and often times a patient can be seen with an absolute minimum of waiting. Sometimes called a minor injuries unit or minor injuries center, clinics such as Urgent 9 are absolutely ideal for some of the following conditions:

  • Fractures and sprains
  • Cuts and burns
  • Bites and rashes
  • Coughs and colds
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Gastrointestinal complaints
  • Infections
  • Aches and pains

Urgent 9 also offers in house X-rays, flu shots and immunizations, and blood drawing to be sent away for analysis.

When is an ER visit more appropriate?

Not all conditions are appropriate for a minor injury center or clinic like Urgent 9. If you experience any of the following, you should go to the emergency room instead of Urgent 9:

  • Heart attack or chest pain
  • Stroke
  • Compound/open fractures
  • Severe bleeding
  • Head trauma
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Numbness or persistent tingling on one side of the body only
  • Loss of consciousness
